Our Mission: Reclaiming young adult lives through empowering employment
and providing them with hope for a new and successful future.
THE STREET BEAN STORY
It all started sitting around a table at New Horizons Ministries, an organization that has been serving homeless and street involved young adults for more than 30 years. We provide them with meals, showers and clothing. We visit them in jail. We get them into housing and drug treatment. And most importantly, we love them where they’re at and give them hope that they can exit street life.
One of the keys to getting off the street is steady employment. We had always dreamed of opening a business that would provide supportive employment for the young adults we serve—a place with the grace to work with them as they work on themselves. They need more than just a job. They need a community to replace their community on the street, and a place to discover a new identity apart from the street.
After a year of research, we decided a coffee shop would be the best fit. Now it was just a matter of…pretty much everything else. Where would it be? How would we staff it? How would we pay for it? What did we think we were doing anyway?
God is pretty amazing. Like dominos, the pieces started falling into place. John Loacker of Kroll Map Company, our neighbor across the street from New Horizons (and now Street Bean landlord) offered us part of his building, and extended us free rent while we built out our space. Architects, designers and contractors donated their time. Real estate professionals and other consultants did the same. Suppliers helped us out with crazy discounts. And donors gave and gave and gave some more.
We opened our doors November 2, 2009. It has been challenging, exhausting and totally amazing. The transformation in the young people that work at Street Bean has been profound and has filled us all a deep sense of hope. Not only are they being transformed, but the community is being transformed as well. Where else in Seattle would you see street kids, urban condo dwellers, musicians, construction workers and KIRO-TV reporters all hanging out together. It’s a beautiful thing. We invite you to come in and experience it yourself. Be a part of changing lives—one cup of coffee at a time.
